Settled by French fur traders and merchants, the growth in Catholicism was bolstered by an influx of Irish and German immigrants in the early 19th century, followed by an increase in Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. These legacies continue today, while the diocese is also home to strong Hispanic, Vietnamese and Black Catholic communities as well as a variety of African cultures.

In 1823, a group of Jesuits from White Marsh, Maryland, established a seminary in Florrisant, Missouri, and began missionary work in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. This led to more than 50 years of growth of a Catholic community in Eastern Kansas and in 1952, Kansas was made an ecclesiastical province with Kansas City, Kansas.
